President Xi Jinping called for a greater role for the Group of 20 in maintaining the multilateral trading system, building an open global economy and promoting economic globalization ahead of his attendance at the G20 Summit in Buenos Aires, capital of Argentina.

In a signed article published in the South American country's largest newspaper, Clarin, on Wednesday, Xi said China fully supports Argentina in its hosting of a successful event this year and hopes the G20 will adhere to the multiparty partnership and work closely together.

The group should push forward the development of economic globalization and help it to become more open, inclusive, balanced and beneficial to all countries and their people, Xi said.

The president said China hopes the G20 will continue to take the lead on the path of innovation-driven growth, promote a long-term governance mechanism and give prominence to development issues in terms of global macro-policy coordination.

The group is also expected to safeguard the growth of developing countries and support their infrastructure and interconnectivity construction to help them realize sustainable development, he added.

Xi will also make a state visit to Argentina, and he called on the two countries to jointly create a new era for their comprehensive strategic partnership, thus bringing more benefits to their people.

China and Argentina, though geographically distant, are good friends with mutual trust as well as good partners sharing common development, Xi said, and the people of both countries are striving for national development.

The president suggested both sides continue to promote the prospects of the bilateral relationship with broader horizons, and the countries should firmly support each other on issues concerning their core interests and major concerns.

The two countries should strengthen their alignment of development strategies and jointly promote Belt and Road construction, as well as expand people-to-people exchanges, he said.

He also called on China and Argentina to enhance coordination within multilateral frameworks to safeguard the fundamental interests of emerging market economies and developing countries.

Xi said the comprehensive and fast development of the China-Argentina relationship is a symbol of the booming ties between China and Latin American countries.

Following the principle of extensive consultation, joint contribution and shared benefits, China is willing to work with Latin American and Caribbean countries in the joint construction of the Belt and Road so as to bring their people more tangible benefits and promote the upgrading and innovative development of China-Latin American cooperation, he said.
