On March 14, more than 10 ancient tombs, discovered at the construction site of the Yangtze-to-Huaihe Water Diversion Project in Luyi county of Zhoukou city, Henan province, were being excavated by dozens of people under the command of archaeologists. According to the report, these tombs belong to the Han Dynasty (206 BC-AD 220).

According to the archaeologists, traces of theft have been found in the tombs, which were built with typical bricks of the Han Dynasty. Many practical tools with delicate ornaments and vivid carvings have been unearthed, but their values still need further verification. Judged from the structures, the tombs do not seem to belong to dignitaries, but the exact owners cannot be figured out at present. It is certain that the excavation of these tombs is of great significance to enrich the culture of the Central Plains.

It is reported that the Han ethnic group, China’s most populous ethnic group, formerly known as the Huaxia, also originated from the Han Dynasty. Great achievements were made in the field of science and technology in the Han Dynasty. For example, Cai Lun improved paper-making technique, making it one of the four great inventions of China; Zhang Heng invented the seismograph and the armillary sphere, etc.

Located in eastern Zhoukou city of Henan province, Luyi county, with a long history and deep cultural deposit, has discovered a large number of cultural relics related to the Han dynasty, such as the “Liying Ruins” in northern Liying village of northwestern Chengguan town, “Sunlou Ruins” in eastern Sunlou village of Zhengjiaji town, “Pottery Kiln Ruins” near the ship lock at the south bank of the Wohe River in northeastern Luyi, etc. The most famous ones include the “Tomb of Yu Ji” in southern Guozhuang village of Chengguan town and the “Ancient City of Wuping” in Wupingcheng village of Qiuji town. Historical record shows that Cao Cao was once designated as the governor of Wuping, today’s “Ancient City of Wuping”, by Emperor Xian of the Han.
