Dushan Jade Witnesses China's 7,000 History of Jade Production

On December 14, at the meeting on Henan's archaeological achievement exchanges in 2020, Ma Juncai, a researcher at the Henan Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology and the team leader of archaeological excavations at the Huangshan site, remarked that, at the Huangshan site, archaeologists have discovered a raw material of Dushan jade in the tombs of jade craftsmen during the early period of Yangshao Culture, showing that China's jade production has a history of nearly 7,000 years.

Located 100 meters to the north of Huangshan village of Pushan town, Wolong district, Nanyang city, the Huangshan site, with the Baihe River in its east, is about 3.5 kilometers away from the mountains of Fengshan and Pushan that are rich in limestone, geographically 3 kilometers away from Dushan, a famous mountain famous for jade production in China, and 12 kilometers away from the downtown area of Nanyang. Since May 2018, the archaeological team, jointly formed by the archaeologists from Henan Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology and Nanyang Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology, have excavated consecutively at the Huangshan site.

After over two years of archaeological excavations, it has been confirmed that the Huangshan site is a large central settlement featured by jade production and exchange (jade production base plus port) during the late period of Yangshao Culture and the period of Qujialing Culture, not only ending the history that there was no Neolithic jade workshop site in the Central Plains and the middle reaches of the Yangtze River, but also providing key materials for the study of the origins of Chinese civilization.

At present, the Huangshan site has been listed into the task of Archaeological China -- Study on the Process of Civilization in the Middle Reaches of the Yangtze River by the National Cultural Heritage Administration. Experts believe that long-term archaeological excavations are required at the Huangshan site since it is closely related to the formation of Chinese civilization about 5,000 years ago, and one of the key research objects for the study of the origins of civilizations in Jianghan Plain and Central Plains as well as the cultural communication and integration between the south and north.
