Henan’s Bumper Harvest Sees Optimization of Wheat Quality

In the harvest season, wheat harvest across the Central Plains is progressing smoothly. On June 2, at Weiji town of Shangshui county, Zhoukou city, numbers of large combine-harvesters were busy working in the wheat fields to help farmers separate kernels and straws. “From May 28 till now, nearly 95 percent of wheat has been harvested.” Liu Tianhua, a big grain planter and the director of Tianhua Agricultural Cooperative of Shangqiu, told the reporter.

According to Liu, thanks to the good weather, the wheat grows much better than last year. Besides, the harvest efficiency has also been promoted significantly this year.

Apart from Zhoukou, wheat harvest in Xiayi county of Shangqiu city was also started on June 2, marking the busiest period of the year for farmers. Owing to the popularization of modern agricultural machinery, Tong Kun, a young native of post-90s, does not feel a bit anxious or worried.

“No worries.” Tong said, “Apart from dozens mu (1 mu equals to 0.067 hectares) of my own wheat, the 400 mu of wheat among the 1,000 mu of circulated land has been harvested by machines only in half a day. Named ‘Xinmai 26’, the wheat we planted is a kind of high-quality strong gluten wheat. Since we have already signed the procurement deals, there is no need to worry about the sales.”

Meanwhile, Xiuwu county of Jiaozuo city has hit another record high in China’s per-unit yield of wheat in summer season. “In the 30 mu of demonstration land, one sample area (1.135 mu) was randomly harvested with a combine-harvester, where 1002.5 kg of fresh kernels were produced. According to the criteria, the average yield per mu is 841.5 kg.” Guo Tiancai, professor of Henan Agricultural University and adviser (in wheat sector) of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, announced that Xiuwu has hit another record high in China’s per-unit yield of summer wheat!

As a major summer grain producer in China, in 2019, Henan’s summer grain output contributed to 56 percent of the province’s total, and its wheat output accounted for 28 percent of the country’s total, ranking first in China.

On June 3, Wang Junzhong, member of the Leading Party Members’ Group of Henan Provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Affairs and chief agronomist of the department, remarked at the news briefing that, Henan’s wheat area has remained above 85.5 million mu this year, which is basically the same as the last year, and the wheat structure has become more reasonable with high-quality wheat realizing 13.5 million mu (accounting for 15.8 percent of the total) and order rate reaching 90 percent. By 17:00 on June 2, 5,491 mu of wheat has been harvested across the province, accounting for 64 percent of the total.
