Wu Ming from Germany Becomes a TCM Fan in Henan

"Please put your hand here and let me feel your pulse..." "Do you often stay up late? Changing to a healthier and lighter diet helps to relieve your body's internal summer-heat and dampness..." Along with a brief conversation, the patients' illnesses were accurately diagnosed through pulse feeling. This skilled TCM (traditional Chinese medicine) doctor turned out to be a young foreigner.

On July 5, we met him at Henan University of Chinese Medicine. His name is Wu Ming (无名), who comes from Germany and is now studying at Henan University of Chinese Medicine. Wu Ming is full of curiosity about TCM, which has inherited the essence of Chinese culture of thousands of years. "(TCM) is so different from Western medicine." Therefore, he came to China (a place with a 5,000-year civilization) to study TCM 6 years ago.

Why does Wu Ming come to Henan for TCM study?

"Here (Henan) is the birthplace of TCM, and compared to Western medicine, which focuses on data, TCM focuses more on the balance of body, which really fascinates me," said Wu Ming.

Born in the 1990s, Wu Ming shared little about his life, but when it came to TCM, he became talkative immediately. "TCM is so broad and profound that I have only scratched the surface after 5 years' study."

At first, Wu Ming's TCM study was not smooth. "Learning Chinese is already difficult, let alone the large number of rare characters in TCM textbooks or related to acupoints." According to him, the difficulties were much more than expected at first. "Sometimes what the teacher said was completely beyond my comprehension."

According to Liang Xiansen (梁显森), director of the Student Affairs Office of the School of International Education, Henan University of Chinese Medicine, "Cultural differences have not stopped Wu Ming's love for TCM. With the joint efforts of both faculties and classmates, he, the only  international student majoring in TCM, has overcome the language barrier, making progress every day."

During the 5-year college life, Wu Ming often went to Luoyang, Kaifeng, Nanyang, Zhoukou, etc., to experience the culture of TCM with his classmates, and such famous TCM cities across the province also left a deep impression on him.

Nanyang is not only the hometown of Medical Sage Zhang Zhongjing, but also the cradle of the culture of TCM in Henan. The Medical Sage Temple in Nanyang also attracted Wu Ming. "The medical book Treatise on Febrile and Miscellaneous Diseases written by Zhang Zhongjing has provided a lot of useful knowledge for TCM students. Although it was my first trip to the Medical Sage Temple, everything looked familiar and I felt grateful to the ancestor of TCM." Wu Ming recalled his past experience.

In June this year, Wu Ming finished his 10-month clinical practice. "There is still a long way to go." Wu Ming said happily that he has succeeded in applying for a master's program and will continue his studies with his TCM tutor.

"As the Chinese saying goes, 'Learning is an endless process.' I still have a lot to learn." Wu Ming has its own considerations for the future. "Step by step, I will do my best to master such an ancient but vibrant Chinese culture."
