Located in northwestern Henan, Jiyuan covers an area of 1,931 square kilometers with a permanent resident population of 727,265 (the 7th national census).
Pillar industries including iron, steel, lead, zinc, energy, chemical, equipment manufacturing and electronic information have taken shape and Jiyuan has been the largest lead and zinc base in China and one of the most important bases of iron, steel, energy, chemical and equipment manufacturing in Henan. The sales of Jiyuan Iron and Steel Group and Yuguang Group surpass 10 billion yuan. Tiantan Ink Stone, a handcraft made in Jiyuan, is one of the four most well-known ink stones in China. Jiyuan is one of the first National Modernized Agriculture Demonstration Zones owing to the progress made in agriculture, namely vegetables, tobacco, thin-skinned walnuts, rabdosia rubescens and animal husbandry.
Jiyuan enjoys convenient transportation as a hub connecting the North China Plain with the central and western area. A three-dimensional transport network has formed with the crossing of Jiaozuo-Zhicheng Railway and Houma-Yueshan Railway and various highways including Erenhot-Guangzhou Expressway, Changyuan-Jiyuan Expressway and National Highway 207.
Jiyuan is richly endowed with tourism resources. Mount Wangwu is a Global Geopark and one of the nine famous mountains in ancient China. Tourists are warmly welcomed to visit Xiaolangdi Dam and the Three Gorges of the Yellow River at the Yellow River Xiaolangdi Scenic Area. Wulongkou is a National Natural Reserve of Macaques. The classic garden Jidu Temple shows the essence of architectures of the Tang, Song, Yuan, Ming, Qing dynasties and is named "Ancient Chinese Architecture Museum".
Jiyuan has established the sister city relationship with Wayne County of the USA, Chilgok County of Korea and Niiza City of Japan.
