Bordering Hubei and Anhui, Xinyang administers 8 counties and 2 districts with a permanent resident population of 6,234,401 (the 7th national census) distributed over a land area of 18,925 square kilometers.
Xinyang boasts rich resources, among which the proven reserve of perlite ranks second in the world and in Asia and its quality enjoys great reputation worldwide. The total scale of the leading industries including green food, cutting-edge building materials, electronic information, modern furniture and home accessories and modern logistics reaches 120 billion yuan.
The city has long been known as the “Land of Fish and Rice” yielding large amount of rice, wheat, oilseed rape and other agricultural products. Its cash crops mainly include tea, chestnuts, ginkgo and jute. The Maojian Tea of Xinyang won the gold award of the 1915 Panama Pacific International Exposition. Xinyang is named the “Capital of Maojian Tea” and has successfully held 27 international tea culture festivals boasting its green and black teas and five China Famous Brands.
Xinyang enjoys convenient transportation with Beijing-Guangzhou Railway and Beijing-Kowloon Railway traversing from the north to the south and Nanjing-Xi’an Railway from the west to the east. Beijing-Zhuhai Expressway, Shanghai-Xi’an Expressway, Arun Banner-Shenzhen Expressway, National Highways 106, 107 and 312 together with the existing county and town roads have formed a rather complete transportation network.
Xinyang has been included on the list of “Top Ten Most Livable Cities in China” in nine consecutive years and “National Demonstration Cities of Ecology”. Jigong Mountain, one of the most well-known summer resorts in China, enjoys great reputation at home and abroad. A large number of famous tourist attractions in Xinyang including Nanwan Lake, Jingangtai Caverns and Lingshan Temple, the state temple of Tang and Ming dynasties, welcome all visitors from the whole world.
Xinyang has established the sister city relationship with Gochang County of Korea.
