Located in northeastern Henan, Puyang covers an area of 4,188 square kilometers and has a permanent resident population of 3,772,088 (the 7th national census). It administers 5 counties and 1 district.
Puyang is a National Historical and Cultural City, also known as the “Ancient Capital of King Zhuan Xu” and the “Native Place of the Ancient Emperor Shun”. Puyang's black ceramics and wheat straw patchwork are well-known throughout China. With a lovely living environment, Puyang is renowned as a "Paradise on Earth” and an “Oasis of the Central Plains”. The city is also granted the title of the “Hometown of China's Acrobatics" as its acrobatics is immensely popular both at home and abroad.
Puyang is endowed with enormous underground resources, and is especially rich in petroleum, natural gas, salt and coal. With its comparative advantage in resources, Puyang has established a comprehensive industrial system with petrochemical industry as its main stay and set up a number of large enterprises, such as Zhongyuan Oilfield Company, Zhongyuan Ethylene Corporation and Zhongyuan Petrochemical Corporation, and the largest production base for special glasses, electric illuminants, plastics and textile in North China.
Puyang is China's major production base for commodity grain. It abounds with wheat, rice, corn, soybean, peanut and other agricultural products that are high-yielding and of high quality. The city's breeding of livestock and poultry such as pigs, sheep, rabbits and chicken has formed scale.
Puyang represents a gateway in northeastern Henan and an important access to the sea in Central China Economic Region. The city sits at the bordering area of Henan Province, Shandong Province and Hebei Province.
Puyang has set up sister city relationship with Ashburton of New Zealand and Chu River of Kyrgyzstan.
