Kaifeng covers an area of 6,266 square kilometers with a permanent resident population of 4,824,016 (the 7th national census) and it administers 4 counties and 5 districts. As National Historical and Cultural City, Kaifeng is also known as the ”Chrysanthemum City" and the “Calligraphy City”.
Being the ”Ancient Capital City for Eight Dynasties”, Kaifeng has a history of over 4,100 years. With such a long history and rich cultural heritage, Kaifeng is renowned as the ”Ancient Capital of the Song Dynasty”. It has picturesque scenery and intriguing landscapes. Each year, the “Qingming Cultural Festival” held in spring and the "Chrysanthemum Cultural Festival” held in autumn attract many tourists both at home and abroad.
Kaifeng has a full-fledged industrial system with an industrial cluster of automobile and auto parts, equipment, chemical, new material, food, textile, photovoltaics, wood, bio-medicine and electronic information taking shape. With its abundant farm produce, the city serves as a major national production base for wheat, peanut and cotton. It's the biggest producer of watermelon and peanut in Henan, and the second largest producer of garlic in China.
As a hub in the Eurasian Land Bridge, Kaifeng is stepping up efforts in its integration with Zhengzhou. The two cities are beginning to share financial, communication and other services as Zhengzhou-Kaifeng Urban Expressway has been put into service. It takes only 30 minutes' drive to travel from Kaifeng to Zhengzhou Xinzheng International Airport, and if you travel on the Inter-City Rail, it takes only 28 minutes to Zhengzhou East Railway Station which connects Zhengzhou subway.
Kaifeng has set up sister city relationship with 6 cities, including Wichita of America, Toda of Japan, Yeongcheon of South Korea, and Wingecarribee Shire of Australia.
