New Findings Unveiled at Erlitou Site in Luoyang, Henan

Chinese archaeologists announced today (Sept. 16) that some new major discoveries have been made at the capital city site of the Xia Dynasty (2070-1600 BC) in Luoyang city of Henan province, including more roads and walls, which have further proved Erlitou's multi-grid layout. And such a city layout is believed to be the embryonic form of today's block system.

More roads and rammed earth walls on their sides have been discovered since 2021. Rich pottery remains were found for the first time in the northern part of the site. Nearly 100 square meters of bone and horn processing workshops were found at the southwest corner of the palace areas. To the west of the sacrificial areas, large dwelling sites and high standard burial grounds were found. They are of great significance to study China's early capital system, handicraft industry, social economy, etiquette and funeral system.
2021年以来,考古工作陆续揭露了多处城市道路和道路两侧夯土墙,遗址北缘中部首次发现较为丰富的制陶遗存,宫城西南角发现了近百平方米的骨、角器加工作坊,祭祀区以西发现有二里头文化大型居址及高规格墓葬,是探讨早期国家都城制度、手工业与社会经济、礼仪与丧葬制度等问题的重要线索。
