Archaeologists have discovered a gold "funeral mask" dating back more than 3,000 years in an ancient noble tomb at the capital ruins of the Shang Dynasty (1600-1046 BC) in Zhengzhou, said local authority on September 16, 2022. The mask measures 18.3 cm in length and 14.5 cm in width, weighs around 40 grams, and is earlier than the gold masks unearthed from the Sanxingdui site of the late Shang Dynasty. According to Gu Wanfa, head of Zhengzhou Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology, a large number of bronze masks and gold products unearthed at the Sanxingdui site were probably influenced by the culture of Central Plains. He believes that the discovery of a large number of gold products at the capital ruins of the Shang Dynasty in Zhengzhou, especially the gold "funeral mask", is bound to provide new materials for further studying the culture of gold masks and decorations in Southwest China.
