Spring Festival is not unique to China
Apart from China, there are many other countries in the world where the Lunar New Year is celebrated as an official holiday, namely South Korea, North Korea, Vietnam, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Mauritius, Myanmar and Brunei.
New Year's Eve may fall on the 29th day of the 12th lunar month
The number of days on the lunar calendar is determined by the motions of the Earth, moon and sun. However, it takes the moon 29.53 days on average to cycle from one full moon to the next. So, it is quite normal that there are only 29 days in a lunar month. If this occurrence appears in the 12th lunar month, New Year's Eve will fall on the 29th day.
Spring Festival may be celebrated twice a year
If the 2nd lunar month of a year is a Leap Month or an intercalary month, the Spring Festival may be celebrated twice. It only happens 6 times between 1645 (when the Leap Month system was officially launched) and 2800–1651, 2262, 2357, 2520, 2539 and 2643 exactly. In those circumstances, normally the first occurrence of the Spring Festival is celebrated.
