Calligraphy and Seal Cutting for Yellow Emperor Worship, Hold Together for Constructing Chinese Dream

Spring is bathing the southern bank of the Yellow River, and it's time to pay homage to our ancestors again. On April 8th, the National Calligraphy and Seal Carving Art Exhibition 2024 - "Xuanyuan Affection, Chinese Dream", opened at the Zhengzhou Art Museum (New Building). This marks the beginning of a series of activities for the ancestral worship ceremony of the Yellow Emperor in the Lunar Jiachen Year (Loong Year).

春沐河之南，又是拜祖时。4月8日，“轩辕情 中国梦”——2024·全国书法篆刻作品展在郑州美术馆（新馆）开幕，甲辰年黄帝故里拜祖大典系列活动的序幕由此拉开。

This exhibition collected over 4,000 pieces of calligraphy and seal carving works from descendants of the Yan and Huang emperors from all over the country. After expert evaluation, a total of 150 works were selected for exhibition, including10 award-winning pieces. The works are thematic, feature diverse styles, and are of high quality, carrying the legacy and opening up to the future, making it a significant review and showcase of the national calligraphy creation team.

此次展览征集到来自五湖四海的炎黄子孙的书法篆刻作品4000余件，经过专家评审，共评出150件书法篆刻作品予以展出，其中包括10件获奖作品。作品主题性强、风貌多样，质量上乘，承古开今，堪称是全国书法创作队伍的一次大检阅、大展示。

In the afternoon of the8th, guests from the host and organizing units, along with calligraphers from across the province and calligraphy creators and enthusiasts from nationwide, gathered at the Zhengzhou Art Museum to witness the opening of the exhibition. They experienced the "Xuanyuan Affection" of the descendants of Yan and Huang from the calligraphy works, expressing the passionate aspirations of the Chinese nation to build "the Chinese Dream" together.

8日下午，主办、承办单位嘉宾和来自全省的书法工作者、来自全国的书法作者和爱好者齐聚郑州美术馆，共同见证展览的开幕，从书法作品中感悟炎黄子孙慎终追远的“轩辕情”，表达华夏民族同心共筑“中国梦”的炽热情怀。

In recent years, calligraphy in Henan has adhered to a development strategy of compatibility and absorption, drawing the strengths of various schools, and maintaining harmony while embracing diversity. It tells stories of Henan, of Central Plains, and of Yellow River through calligraphic art. Calligraphy and seal carving creations present a scene of contention among hundreds of schools, which has played a significant role in promoting the prosperity and development of contemporary culture and highlighting the cultural soft power. Liu Yuemao, Vice President of the Chinese Calligraphers Association, said that the successful holding of National Calligraphy and Seal Carving Art Exhibition themed of "Xuanyuan Affection· China Dream" could not have been achieved without the inspirational power of the "Central Plains Calligraphy” brand, nor could it have been done without the nourishment of the culturally rich soil in Henan.

近年来，河南书法坚持兼容并蓄、博采众长、和而不同的发展方针，以书法艺术讲好河南故事、中原故事、黄河故事，书法篆刻创作呈现百家争鸣的景象，这对于促进当代文化繁荣发展、彰显文化软实力发挥了重要作用。中国书法家协会副主席刘月卯表示，“轩辕情·中国梦”全国书法篆刻作品展的成功举办，离不开“中原书法”品牌的时代感召力，更离不开河南这片文化沃土的滋养。

"Using the art of calligraphy to extol the merits of the Yellow Emperor, display the culture of the Yellow Emperor, and interpret the spirit of the Yellow Emperor is of great significance for the inheritance of China’s excellent traditional culture. The exhibition of outstanding calligraphy and seal carving works themed on the Yellow Emperor's culture, the root culture, will undoubtedly serve as a bond, gathering the powerful force of Chinese people at home and abroad, solidifying the national community consciousness, and jointly composing a harmonious chapter," said Shi Dadong (the Executive Deputy Director of the Organizing Committee of the Ancestral Worship Ceremony, Vice Chairman of the Zhengzhou City Political Consultative Conference and member of the Party Leadership Group).

“通过书法艺术歌颂黄帝功德、展现黄帝文化、解读黄帝精神，对传承中华优秀传统文化意义重大。集中展出以黄帝文化为主题的书法篆刻佳作，必将以根亲文化为纽带，汇聚海内外中华儿女磅礴之力，铸牢民族共同体意识，共谱同心华章。”拜祖大典组委会执行副主任、郑州市政协党组成员、副主席石大东说。

Many visitors traveled from other places to attend the exhibition. Huang Yang, a calligrapher from Hebei Province, also arrived at the scene that day. He told the reporter that his work"Shi Ji· Wu Di Ben Ji"(The Records of the Grand Historian· The Annals of the Five Emperors)had won an award at this exhibition, and by reviewing the virtuous deeds and great achievements of the five emperors Huang Di, Zhuangxu, Di Ku, Yao, and Shun, he gained a deeper understanding of the initial stage of Chinese civilization. The calligraphy work"Sun Yiqing Visiting the Homestead of the Xuan Yuan Ancestor with Affections"by Xu Guangli from Henan was also selected for the exhibition. She said that after thousands of years of accumulation and development, the culture of Yellow Emperor has deeply integrated into the bloodline of the Chinese nation. Using the art of calligraphy to promote the Yellow Emperor culture is an indispensable responsibility and obligation for contemporary calligraphers.

很多观众从外地赶来参观展览。河北的书法作者黄杨当天也来到现场。他告诉记者，他的作品《史记·五帝本纪》在此次展览中获奖，重温黄帝、颛顼、帝喾、尧、舜五位帝王的美德丰功，使他对中华文明的初始阶段有了更加深刻的理解。河南书家许广丽创作的《孙轶青·谒轩辕故里有感》也入选展览。她说，经过数千年的积淀与发展，黄帝文化已经深深融入中华民族的血脉。用书法艺术的形式来弘扬黄帝文化，是当代书法家义不容辞的责任和义务。

At the exhibition site, calligraphy enthusiasts dressed in horse-face skirts, Qipao, and other traditional costume became a major highlight, exhibiting the elegance of national style through their costumes, exuding a unique charm in modern society.

展览现场，身穿马面裙、旗袍等打卡参观的书法爱好者成为一大亮点，一袭古装尽显国风雅韵，在现代社会散发着独特魅力。

It is reported that the National Chinese Painting Exhibition of "Xuanyuan Affection· Chinese Dream" is scheduled to hold its opening ceremony on April 11th. Currently, 257 fine Chinese paintings themed on the Yellow Emperor have already been opened to the public at the Zhengzhou Art Museum, complementing the calligraphy and seal carving works, and together they are sharing the affection of "Xuanyuan Worship" with brushes, inks and colors.
