Unexpected Anyang ① | A Laboratory Specializing in Oracle Bone Inscriptions

A remarkable place in Anyang, China, bridges 3,000 years from ancient times to modern ages with "a single click" in computer, propelling oracle bone research into the digital era. That is the Key Laboratory of Oracle Information Processing at Anyang Normal University, established in July 2018.

安阳有个神奇的地方,它能“一键”连接3000年,将甲骨学研究带入数字化时代。这就是成立于2018年7月的安阳师范学院甲骨文信息处理教育部重点实验室。

The Key Laboratory has developed the world's largest oracle bone inscription database, "Yinqiwenyuan," providing comprehensive big data support for oracle bone research. The platform breaks through the bottleneck of accessing oracle bone research materials and is currently regarded as the most authoritative oracle bone data platform globally.

这个实验室,研发出目前最大的甲骨文数据库——“殷契文渊”,为甲骨学研究提供大数据支持,破解过去获取甲骨文研究资料难的瓶颈,是目前全球最权威的甲骨文数据平台。

AI-Powered Oracle Bone Stitching

Utilizing advanced technologies like edge equidistant stitching algorithms and deep stitching models, the lab has created an AI-powered system to automatically stitch together fragmented oracle bones. So far, it has successfully pieced together 78 pairs of oracle bone fragments. Among them, one pair contained a record of a solar eclipse from over 3,000 years ago in the Shang Dynasty, offering new insights into Shang Dynasty history and its calendar. The system can identify and sort over 300 highly similar pieces from a pool of 1,500 within two minutes, providing crucial digital support for experts.

这里,能用人工智能缀合碎片甲骨。实验室利用边缘等距离拼接算法、深度拼接模型等技术,研发出甲骨文自动缀合系统,已成功缀合78对甲骨碎片。其中一对上还发现了关于3000多年前商代的一次日食记载,为商代史和历法研究提供了新的依据。这个甲骨文自动缀合系统可以在不到两分钟时间内,从1500片甲骨中筛选出300多片相似度比较高的进行排序,为专家缀合甲骨提供数字依据。

Digitally Immortalizing Ancient Oracle Bones

The lab also leverages AI to achieve breakthroughs in "micro-trace analysis" and "three-dimensional modeling" of oracle bones. By establishing a comprehensive data model, the lab enables high-fidelity digital restoration and preservation of these ancient artifacts, effectively immortalizing them in the digital space.
