As a highly regarded academic subject in Chinese archaeology, the Erlitou Site Museum of the Xia Capital announced the upcoming launch of the exhibition "Rediscovering Xia Culture – New Discoveries And Achievements" on December 24. This exhibition will showcase the latest archaeological excavation results from the past five years, bringing the long-sealed Xia civilization vividly to the public.
The exhibition features five thematic sections: "Kingship · Chronology," "Yu's Traces · Settlements," "Clans · Ethnic Groups," "Land Cultivation · Subsistence," and "All Under Heaven · Civilization." It highlights significant breakthroughs in Xia culture research, such as constructing chronological systems, clarifying state forms, and revealing characteristics of civilization. The exhibition integrates findings from excavations at 19 key sites and incorporates data from over 800 survey points. Most of the 236 exhibits will be shown to the public for the first time, providing a comprehensive "New Compilation of Xia Dynasty Archaeology."
To make academic achievements accessible to everyone, the exhibition combines various display methods, including cultural relic displays, archaeological scene restorations, large sand table demonstrations, multimedia animations, and expert videos. This approach balances academic rigor with visual appeal, vividly showcasing the evolution of Xia culture from scattered settlements to a unified royal state.
Since the discovery of the Erlitou site in 1959, research has made significant progress. The "Archaeological China – Xia Culture Research" project has advanced through excavations at key sites like Yuzhuang in Ye county, Baligiao in Fangcheng, Wadian in Yuzhou, and Dongxiafeng in Xia county, helping to create a broader understanding of Xia culture. This exhibition brings together over 20 museums, archaeological institutes, and universities, representing nearly all major contributors to the project and achieving a unified presentation of national resources on Xia culture.
From the dust-covered site to the vibrant exhibition, and from academic reports to engaging narratives, this exhibition not only reviews key achievements but also exemplifies the transformation of academic research into public engagement. "This exhibition isn't just a summary of our achievements; it's also a great example of how academic work can change and how collaboration drives innovation. It invites the public to connect with a 3,000-year-old civilization and discover the story of early Chinese history," said a representative from the Erlitou Site Museum of the Xia Capital.
